Do you make this one mistake that results in an unexciting painting ?

American Contemporary plein air painter

Whether you paint in the studio or outdoors in nature, you gotta look for the light !

The subject may be your first excitement about why you're painting the subject, maybe it's the color,  but look to put that subject 'in the right light'...

Most artists would agree that 80 percent of your landscape painting is going to end up
in the middle value range. It's what I call baking the cake...the bare bones, structure - call it what you may.
It has to be there to have a solid painting, assuming you're painting in a representational way.
In the beginning stages of learning to 'see', we all want to paint the bling. So the amateur artist will go right for the frosting, but the painting has no structure, so remember to 'bake the cake' to hold it together. And with the 'frosting', plan your lights and darks for the punch that will add excitement to your ' painting.

Take the time to look for the light and then look for your design - whether it's a panorama or something right at your feet. Your painting will be stronger for it.

plein air painter - The Art of seeing

American Contemporary plein air painter.
My book, as you may already know, is finished.
Need to carve out some focus time to 'gather' my files and start my search for an editor 'match'...

In the meantime, I continue to personally work with the material in my book in my own everyday life (a recent experience landed me in Paris, France) At the end of a 3 hr workshop the other day, a woman came up to me and said 'you enriched my life'. It's an amazing feeling to validate the material I've spent years working on...www.permissiongranted.org

plein air painter - end of an era

American Contemporary plein air painter.

Thank you to Maid of the Mist for your kindness to me through the years . I will remember fondly announcing 'it's Jacqueline the artist' and the sound of the security entrance opening, letting me into a wondrous world of painting at the base of the Falls...thanks especially to Tim and his office staff...end of an era. http://www.niagarafallsreview.ca/2013/10/24/farewell-maid-of-the-mist

plein air painter - Greece October 6-15, 2013

American Contemporary plein air painter.
Artist J. R. Baldini is selected to head an art workshop watercolor journaling tour to the Greek Islands.
The Tour is organized by Wanderwomen/Eurynome Journeys out of Camden Maine Oct 6-15.
This tour is women only, because there's a different kind of energy when women create together.

The Tour director and J.R. actually met about 7 years ago on a tiny island in Maine. They exchanged business cards and casually mentioned, 'we should do something together sometime' Last year the tour director found the card and remembered the conversation.

The rest of the story will be played out, as the group tours some of the less touristy islands, journaling, cooking and even taking a dance lesson on their memorable "Greek Muse" holiday workshop.
More information can be found at http://www.permissiongranted.org or email info@eurynomejourneys.com

Women only Oct Greek Tour

American Contemporary plein air painter.
Women only October Greek Muse Tour and workshop.

The tickets are here and I'm really excited about Greece !
If you have a minute..........
A gifted friend of mine, Molly, who's a psychologist told me about progression therapy - it goes something like this.....

Sit still in a comfortable chair, close your eyes & do a few deep breathing inhale and exhale breaths. Imagine you are entering a room - in the room is a chair with the back to you. Walk into the room and sit opposite the other chair. In the other chair sits your 80 year old self. The other chair is a rocking chair. After a long life of putting others first, please tell your 80 year old self why you wanted to (insert something wonderful you wish you could do for yourself right now) and you never 'did'.
It really hits home about how you always putting yourself last.
This year I made a promise to myself "to always take care of me :)"
It seemed silly to say this to "me" but, I realized 'it really meant something'
DO SOMETHING WONDERFUL FOR YOURSELF TODAY _ WHATEVER THAT MAY BE...
We still have room for one more to join this group of creative women as we tour and journal our way through the Greek Isles for the Greek Muse workshop...if you'd like more info at www.permissiongranted.org

plein air paintings - Niagara Falls art workshops

American Contemporary plein air painter.

 Murray's story

Do you approach everyday events that present themselves, as Possibilities to explore or as obstacles to be overcome ?

During a workshop in Niagara Falls, I was explaining the process of using grisaille (value under painting) was by no mean the end of decision making when starting a painting - it suggested some of the possibilities. Often, my painting gets more simplified, as I 'confirm' that elements put in as possibilities, aren't needed in the composition as supporting players.

I don't view my canvas or life, as a series of obstacles to overcome.

A gentleman approaches and introduces himself as being from the Brain Injury Center in a neighboring city, saying he has an artist that would like to come over to say hello, if that wouldn't disturb us. I say it would be fine and continue with the workshop discussion. 10 minutes later, I glanced in the direction he walked, and notice a very elaborate process of a hydralic lift, moving a wheelchair down from a large van and thought, what an effort was being made to enable this person to simply come over to say hello.

Murray was a gentleman who was 60 and through various means of communication (his speech was affected by his brain injury), had been a director of an art gallery and an artist for many years. He still paints and goes to a small town near him to paint portaits of residents of a nursing home. The caretakers with Murray told us that because of his brain injury, he only completes half a face but, thinks he's done the whole portrait.

Murray laughed and said "Modern Art"...

Murray thinks of the Possibilities and not the obstacles...

plein air painter - Monhegan Island - the island time forgot...

American Contemporary plein air painter.

The Monhegan Island workshop August 5 - 9 , 2013
If you are still thinking about this workshop,  only a few spaces remaining.

About the island...
Be prepared to step back about 60 years in time, to when things were simpler,  there was time to appreciate a sunrise or sunset, people took time to smell the roses...again and again.
The island is like nothing you've experienced, if you're a creative person, or would like to find out if you are - you'll experience a calmness, tranquility really, that stills the inner voice to a point where you can again hear the whisper of your soul. If you've already been to the island, you know how elusive it is to put the atmosphere and the state of mind you experience in mere words...

You would be surprised how many people who take this workshop remark that they've been following the notices for a few years and they're so excited to be finally doing it 'this year'.

If you're thinking about it, listen to that whisper and don't miss this opportunity.

plein air painter - Green Drake Gallery, Millheim PA

American Contemporary plein air painter.

J. R. Baldini is from upstate New York where she studied painting and printmaking from a very early age at Munson Williams Proctor School of Art, now part of Pratt.

Having spent 30 years painting on tiny and exotic islands and the Niagara Peninsula, she now resides there with well known Canadian photographer husband Charles Vandersluys and their Silky terrier Bebe Star.

J, R. is referred by the National Gallery of Canada as the only Contemporary artist painting Niagara Falls, painting Niagara over and over for the same reason Monet painted his haystacks, the ever changing quality of light.

“Painting en plein air has the capability of transferring internal communication to the viewer very successfully. A metaphysical immersion happens when you're drawn to a plein air painting – you're engaged in the atmosphere the painting was created in, connected to a moment in time,” says Baldini.

J. R. founded International Plein Air Painters in 2001, hosting the annual Great Worldwide Paint Out bringing artists from all over North America to Niagara to paint, as the Executive Director and a Signature member of IPAP .

J. R. is currently showing at the NEW CENTURY ARTISTS Gallery in Manhattan and the GREEN DRAKE gallery in PA.,as part of the WORLD TOUR OF CONTEMPORARY LANDSCAPE ARTISTS that she has been a founding member of since 2007. She's been a juror for numerous plein air events and been published in many art and travel magazines. She has taught workshops in St. Lucia for eight years, Maine for many more, Niagara Falls, Florida, SC and new locations including a 'Greek Muse' painting tour of the Greek Islands in the Fall. J. R. is a Master Photographer, she's been inducted in the Niagara Falls Arts & Culture Wall of Fame and is currently writing and illustrating a book on art and psychology and a children’s book on celebrating what makes us different.

Plein Air painting TIP

With plein air painting, I often see artists confused about what to focus on outdoors.
Some truly don't know where to begin painting something in front of them.
What plein air painting is about, is relating
your feelings about the scene, and not about copying nature.
I have seen artists walk around endlessly looking for subject.

A much more dramatic way to paint is to look for 'light'.

Subject is secondary for me. An ordinary object in a wondrous light becomes extraordinary !

And when you have excitement starting your painting, you can more easily carry that through to the finished piece, instead of deciding at the finishing what you can do to make the painting more exciting.

Is your painting missing something but you can't put your finger on it ?
It probably wasn't there to begin with...

Go for the drama !  More info HERE
