The young mother set her foot on the path of life. "Is the way long?" she asked. And her guide said, "Yes, and the way is hard. And you will be old before you reach the end of it. But the end will be better than the beginning." But the young mother was happy and she would not believe that anything could be better than those years. So she played with her children and gathered flowers for them along the way and bathed them in the clear streams; and the sun shone on them and life was good, and the young mother cried, "Nothing will never be lovelier than this."

Then night came, and storm, and the path was dark and the children shook with fear and cold, and the mother drew them close and covered them with her mantle and the children said, "Oh Mother, we are not afraid, for you are near, and no harm can come," and the mother said, "This is better than the brightness of day, for I have taught my children courage."

And the morning came, and there was a hill ahead and the children climbed and grew weary, and the mother was weary, but at all times she said to the children, "A little patience and we are there." So the children climbed and when they reached the top, they said, "We could not have done it without you, Mother." And the mother, when she lay down that night, looked up at the stars and said, "This is a better day than the last, for my children have learned fortitude in the face of hardness. Yesterday I gave them courage, today I have given then strength."

And with the next day came strange clouds which darkened the earth, clouds of war and hate and evil--and the children groped and stumbled, and the mother said, "Look up. Lift your eyes to the light." And the children looked and saw above the clouds an Everlasting Glory, and it guided them and brought them beyond the darkness. And that night the mother said, "This is the best day of all for I have shown my children God."

And the days went on, and the weeks and the months and the years, and the mother grew old, and she was little and bent. And her children were tall and strong and walked with courage. And when the way was rough they lifted her, for she was as light as a feather; and at last they came to a hill, and beyond the hill they could see a shining road and golden gates flung wide. And the mother said, "I have reached the end of my journey. And now I know that the end is better than the beginning, for my children can walk alone and their children after them." And the children said, "You will always walk with us, Mother, even when you have gone through the gates."

And they stood and watched her as she went on alone, and the gates closed after her. And they said, "We cannot see her, but she is with us still. A mother like ours is more than a memory. She is a Living Presence."

Plein air painting - Pawley's Island, South Carolina

Pawley's Island plein air painting Workshop

I spent a week discovering some of Pawley's Island and surrounding areas.
Being the south, of course, I talked fast and had an 'accent'...so I learned to slow it down and enjoy the weather, the people, the low country culture and the food.
We had a nice lunch at LaRocco's outdoor patio, right on the water.
And before leaving for home, sampled the seafood buffet at Captain George's in Myrtle Beach.

Visited Myrtle Beach last winter and planned a workshop on my followup visit.
Many people to thank - David and Sharon for the great accomodations and breakfasts with 'bacon'...Mary Frances from Pen Dragon Art Store in Pawleys, for her sponsorship help, M. Graham for the sponsorship,Marilyn for allowing me to paint on her property - Ruth, Deane, Amy, Angela, Kathy, Lucy for your enthusiasm and openness to new concepts - it was fun getting to know you all...

Plein Air Painter - Aruba Paintings

Watercolors painted on the island of Aruba.
The island is clean, friendly and the climate is wonderful for plein air
painting. There is always a strong breeze, so securing an easel is difficult and because I was painting on a watercolor block, I could paint without one, and position myself comfortably in the shade without a plein air umbrella.


Funny, how people from the same country can stike up a friendship on holidays - we meet Herb Reed (from the Platters) in our hotel bar one afternoon and a few afternoons after that...he really liked a pair of sunglasses my husband was wearing and we gave them to him. Then,we had a running gag, we'd send a different pair of sunglasses backstage, whenever he was in the area, and he'd dedicate a song to us.

Lots of security around, especially in Oranjestad.

According to artist Jacqueline Baldini, paintings shouldn't be ordinary. Rather, they should contain drama.
That's what she told student Anne Pederson as she showed the Chippawa resident how light and shadow affects the outcome of a painting's subject, a flower and vase set by a window sill.
Using a palette of only black acrylic paint, Baldini creates an outline of the subject on a canvas. After the paint dries, Baldini mixes the primary colours -- red, blue and yellow -- to create the base colours of a future masterpiece.

Baldini said teaching a workshop reminds her of the experiences of the sights and sounds of her many travels. She said it keeps life simple.

On Sunday at Baldini's Lundy's Lane studio, the Niagara Falls artist hosted a workshop known as Artist for the Day.

Baldini called the day a "mini holiday" in which patrons participate in an all-day workshop, learning how to paint with full materials in a fun and relaxed atmosphere.

"If you've never painted I'd show you how to and in the end you have a finished original painting," Baldini said. "It's the first time I'm trying this 'indoor' workshop here at the studio."

It was the first time that Pederson had ever tried to paint. She found out about the workshop from an advertisement in Niagara This Week and was excited to give it a try. "Art can be very intimidating," Pederson said. "But after giving it a try I feel very comfortable."

It's always been a sad joke amongst the art community when your local 'highway motel' hosts a 'starving artist' sale.

I set out to write an article but, first went online to see what was available for documentation.

Being that these "original" art sales 'with nothing held back' occured frequently in my hometown in Utica in New York State, a fellow artist and I were head out for some plein air painting one morning and ran across one. WELLLLLL... we couldn't resist-

We walked in, looking around rather quickly, like we would be making a fast exit, which got the immediate attention of a fast talking salesman.

'Do you see something you like?' he asked. We replied yes but, how much would the painting be without the frame ?

They were selling 8x10 'paintings' framed for $10.00 !

He explained that he would have to charge us $7.00 for the painting, so we might as well just take the frame for the extra $3.00..

We replied "oh, we don't want the painting, we want the frame". And the look on his face had us cracking up all the way to the car !

This past Tuesday, on a damp, gray, foggy morning when many Niagara residents would probably prefer to spend a little more time in bed, Jacqueline Baldini was eager to head out to the countryside to capture the mood of the day on canvas.
"I am looking out there," said the Niagara artist at her studio on Lundy's Lane in Niagara Falls, "and going 'Wow, look at that.' "
Those "wow" moments, when Baldini is full of passion for the light and colour a day can bring -- regardless of the weather or the time of year -- has fueled her art for more than 30 years and has earned her the respect of other artists, nationally and internationally, for her ability to produce works embracing special moments and places in the outdoors.
"I don't want a perfect world," said Baldini in a studio with walls full of paintings of the Niagara Falls area, including the rapids of the famous river and its cataract, and of other regions of Niagara and the rest of the world, including Portugal, Spain, the Bahamas, Honduras and Yucatan.
"If all we had were all blue skies and sunshine, that would be boring."
Baldini is offering everyone from beginners to those will some experience in applying oil paints to canvas anything but a boring time at a workshop she is hosting at the Lundy's Lane studio this Sunday.
That workshop, called Day in an Artist's Studio, runs this Sunday, Feb. 10, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with coffee and Danish treats in the morning, a lunch and all materials, including canvas and paints provided, for a fee of $65.
"I am asked frequently to do weekly lessons at my studio," Baldini said. "I made the decision a few years ago, that people learn and absorb much faster when completely immersed in a project."
As a host and mentor at the workshops, Baldini said she always finds them as rewarding as those who attend hopefully do. Often from someone who is just starting out in art, she said, she is reminded of the virtues of keeping things simple in some of her own work.
"I've had complete beginners in my classes," she said, "and I have learned from them."
Baldini's approach to art is something she said is described as "Plein Air Artist" or one who chooses to paint from life outdoors. "This often means painting in the fog, mist or frozen landscape of this beautiful peninsula," she explained. "Plein Air Painting is a metaphysical skill capable of creating an image that lets the viewer 'be there in the moment' when viewing the painting."
An upper New York State native before moving to Niagara Falls more than thirteen years ago, Baldini is the founder and signature member of International Plein Air Painters (an organization of artists dedicated to producing painting of moving outdoor settings around the world) and in 2002 established the first Worldwide Paint Out, that brings groups of artists together through the internet each year to share their work.
Her paintings hang in private and public collections across Canada, the United States, Mexico, the Caribbean and Europe. Niagara Falls Artists - taking back downtown

I attended the meeting recently downtown and I want to stress how important it is for the Niagara Falls community to get involved.

For the past 5 years, I've been organizing a worldwide paint out , bringing artists from all over into the parks each September to paint Niagara. Interesting to note, I can count on one hand, the artists that have been from this area. Sad to say but, because of no community support, the event will happen worldwide but, Niagara Falls NY, will likely organize their own paint out. One more thing that has left this area.

The arts supported by a community, are so important for our children.
The arts always provide a balance, a calming and security, a sense of belonging in a community. And we have much talent in this area.

Niagara Falls is one of the most dramatic locations in North America - artists are naturally drawn to this natural wonder. Let's make sure the arts survive here, the artists can make a living and the community is pulled together in a central location like downtown.
From there, who knows where we can go !

Please support this grassroots movement by letting others and your councils know. Let's make sure this 'revitalization' is publicized - let's give every small town downtown, something to model after. Niagara Falls is always news, let's let the world watch our success story !

Maine - Monhegan Island - George Bellows

Painter George Bellows best known for his paintings of boxers, who died at the early age of 37, exhibit of lesser known more rustic works, painted on Monhegan Island, Maine.

"The Paintings of George Bellows," exhibit at the Mennello Museum of American Art through Feb. 24.

Beautiful Monhegan Island has been an artist colony for centuries with many great artists like Rockwell Kent, George Bellows, Robert Henri, as well as modern artists Andrew Wyeth, Jamie Wyeth, James Fitzgerald, Lawrence C. Goldsmith and others too numerous to mention being drawn to her mystery and spectacular plunging cliffs, as well as the simplicity and beauty of island life. Monhegan is enchanting and seemingly caught in a time warp of its own choosing with no cars and in most places, no electricity. The island has a working lighthouse and museum full of island history and artists.
Monhegan boasts some of the rarest birds and wildflowers in North America and wildlands protected in a trust by Theodore Edison.

Info on Valentine's Workshop

Niagara Falls to New York- most tasty Turkey dressing recipe

Getting ready to head back to New York from Niagara Falls for Thanksgiving.

I'll be periodically adding ethnic recipes as homage' to my Mom who's a terrific cook.
This time of year I am happy to add her most tasty turkey dressing.
This dressing is so filling - we often make a second to freeze for a main course later on.

Turkey dressing

(this never sees the inside of the turkey)

Preparation time about 30 minutes - Baking time - 350 for 1 hour

After you have removed the 'innards' from your turkey, rinse them, and place in a 2.5 qt saucepan
Add
1 small onion scored to release flavor
1 stalk of celery cut ( leave greenery on)
add water to just cover and cook for 20 min. on medium heat
Optional - you can add 1 or 2 chicken bouillion cubes

When cooked, remove meat and place in a large bowl
Add
1 package bought or homemade croutons
1 to 2 cups of your liquid cooked reserve - you want to moisten well but, not drown the dish.
1 pound of lean ground beef
1 egg
1 cup diced celery
1 cup diced onion
1/2 to 1 cup of walnut pieces
1/2 cup salted butter melted
1 teaspoon rosemary seasoning
Salt and pepper to taste.

Mix thoroughly and place in loaf or baking pan.
Preheat oven to 350 and bake for 1 hour.
Serves about 6

Prep can be done the night before and baked along with the rest of your dinner.
You can also substitute ground turkey or chicken for the ground beef.

Niagara Falls Arts & Culture Committee

The Niagara Falls Arts and Culture Committee had a community arts awareness day recently at Niagara Square on McCloud Rd in Niagara Falls.

The purpose was to remind area residents of the vast array of arts organizations and of course, talent and culture groups.

I had a display, along with information set up about International Plein Air Painters, a WORLDWIDE Organization. In September each year IPAP has brought in plein air painters to compete for awards as part of the annual WORLDWIDE Paint Out.

Plein air painting - Niagara Falls to Quebec

Our last day of painting...
In the morning it was warm if you stayed in the sun, so we painted at the boardwalk. Nothing spectacular that caught my eye but, I did a little warm up painting.

From the boardwalk, we moved to a street of end to end cafes ,looking for the dramatic lighting...

At the end of the street, the sun was hitting the Ministry of Finance building and lighting up a maple tree on the sidewalk. it started to get colder, so this looked good to me. Brandy went off for lunch and I painted quickly to be able to move to a warmer location.

I was quite happy with this painting and when Brandy returned, we decide to go up to the fort for some full sun exposure - we did not think about the wind chill up on the hill. Though I started a painting, it was soon apparent that finishing it would be another matter...

We finally decided that our painting part of the trip was 'finis' and went back to Maison du Fort, where we warmed up with a hot cup of tea and a quick chat with Marielle.

I invited her to view our paintings before they were safely packed for the long trip back to Niagara Falls. She gave us a wonderful suggestion for dinner at a local restaurant called Condi's.

We were not disappointed! I had my raviolis again but, this time they were stuffed with lobster - wonderful! and baked french onion soup - well deserved after a cold day outside...

The next morning bright and early, after a send off by Marielle and her two friendly kittys, we were on the VIA rail first class car heading back to southern Ontario.

Breakfast on the train was very good (not like the faux eggs benedict we had the other day at a local restaurant for $20.00 each - when I remember the name, I'll post it to warn you - the hostess was so rude, telling us we could not bring our paintboxes in with us...)

It was good to sit and relax and be served.

I have a showing tomorrow locally in Niagara Falls at Niagara Square.If you're nearby drop in between 10 and 5.

Plein air painting - Niagara Falls to Quebec

The next morning the smell of wonderful pastries home baked by Marielle at the Maison du Fort, came wafting up to the second floor.
A great start to a long day of painting.
In the morning, I painted at Place Royale. I had painted there 4 years ago, and found it a difficult subject - too many doors- too many windows - I was painting in watercolor, this time I was using the M.Graham Oils. I picked a simple composition, choosing to leave out a statue bust of Louis XV standing in the middle of the square. Again, there was construction going on.

In the afternoon, walking around for hours, brought me to the le petite Champlain, a grouping of small quaint shops , not far from Place Royale. Chasing the sun, both to get warm and more dramatic lighting, was tiring and Brandy and I settled on this tiny alley and painted till the sun started to go down.

We then, had another great meal and hospitality at Primavera Restaurant. Just to keep up my strength, ;) I had 4 cheese ravioli and bruschetta.
From there, we headed down to do our last painting of the day.
The corner restaurant - Musee du Fort. The corner has a bit of lighting, and we were kept company by a local sax musician for most of the time we painted, along with many curious onlookers, who no doubt, do not see too many painters out at night.

This is one of my favorites from the trip.

Finis at 9:45 pm, we headed back to the hotel - tired but, feeling great about the day.

We missed another painter friend, Mario, who had come to the hotel to paint with us. We walked around so much, he could never have found us !

Niagara Falls to Quebec-plein air painting

The evening we arrived in Quebec City, the temperature was wonderful. The spirit was willing but, after the twelve and a half hour train trip, we thought it best to get a fresh start in the morning.


Morning on the first day brought rain that continued steady, but, not heavy all day long.

The large gazebos lining the Rue des Carrieres, provided a wonderful view in any direction for plein air painting.

My morning painting included a brilliantly colored foliage tree, something I rarely paint.
I am working with M.Graham oil paints for the first time. Aside from the alkyd medium, to hopefully speed drying some for transport back, I am finding the consistency is working well for me and I don't need turps or other medium.

After a wonderful lunch at a nearby cafe' Relais Place D armes Ltee, we perused a number of galleries. One you may want to visit is Galerie Cimon-35 rue De Buade, and had a chat with Lillian who is very knowledgeable about local artists.

As the rain continued, we sought shelter on the large stone entrance to the Ontario Tourism building and I was able to complete this painting of Monseigneur De Laval, near Rue Port Dauphin.

We stayed at Maison du Fort on Ste. Genevieve', a wonderful little B&B/hotel hybrid, convenient to everything, with our charming hostess, Marielle.

Plein Air Painting - International Plein Air Painters

My catalyst to starting International Plein Air Painters organization, was the disappearance of elements in my landscape canvas, through the years - buildings torn down, climate change because of city infostructure in Niagara Falls, green space receeding and a host of other slow, unnoticeable changes, in the name of progress.

Along with the fact that since plein air painting has always been regional and artists were traveling to international locations frequently - the time for an organization without borders or regions had come, a place for artist to make contacts worldwide.

I paint plein air for many reasons, one of which is to call attention to the everyday, the neglected, the time worn, and show the drama or quiet beauty around us by painting with light.

I have come to know many plein air painters as a result and am happy to call them friends.

Niagara Falls Humane Society - Louisiana Rescue dogs

I visited the Niagara Falls Humane Society yesterday to drop off some supplies for the animals.

They just received 19 dogs from Louisiana that were either unclaimed by owners, lost or running wild. They are all beautiful dogs deserving of a loving home, after the long ordeal they have been through with hurricaine Katrina.

I remember seeing some of the distraught owners on the news, as they were boarded into buses and forced to leave their beloved companions behind.

Niagara Falls Humane Society Annual Used Book Sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The sale takes place at the shelter, located at 6025 Chippawa Pkwy. All of the proceeds raised will be used to assist the animals. The book sale will continue during business hours until Oct. 26.

WET PAINTINGS - Hollyhocks

I've never been a flower painter...
I love flowers in the garden...
I've been passing what's left of the Hollyhocks in the garden every morning this week.
The gardens in Niagara are getting more summer weather this week.
There was a translucent quality, that I thought needed to be captured.
I finally got to spend some time painting this morning. The light moved quickly.
But this 8"x8" oil pochade on linen was the result.

NIAGARA FALLS -- They came to the falls. They saw the falls. They painted the falls. And then they painted some more.
It was another successful Plein Air Paint Out staged on the brink of the city's glorious, world-famous cataract.
More than two dozen plein air painters set up their easels in Queen Victoria Park and around the area Sept. 7-8. It was the fifth time the Paint Out took place in Niagara Falls while International Plein Air Painters staged other Paint Outs across the globe this weekend.
Kath Schifano, from Grand Island, N.Y., has been to the Paint Out in Niagara Falls before, but still found a fresh way to paint things like the falls and the Niagara Falls, N.Y. skyline, subjects she has painted before.
"The coolest part is you really get to know the falls and its parts and bumps and shiny parts," said Schifano, who has also painted Niagara Falls from the American side.
Sam Paonessa, who grew up in Niagara Falls but now lives in Scarborough, agreed there are more than enough ways for artists to look at the falls. It all depends on angles and how the light falls on the water and the escarpment.
"It will take a while before I get tired of painting the falls," said Paonessa, a plein air veteran of 20 years. "It's the beauty and the power. Its got such a force you want to be able to capture."
Manuel Jomok, from Red Bank, N.J., plans to retire this year, pack up an RV and tour the United States to paint everything he sees. His goal is to get to Alaska by 2009.
"It's different landscapes, different people, different culture," he said of the joy of painting outside. "It's all part of the experience.
Painters had a beautiful day to paint outside Saturday, but had to deal with windy conditions Friday -- something they say is worse than painting in the rain because everything is moving: subject, canvas, paint.
"I don't know if you call that fun," Jomok joked. "It's part of plein air.
"It's exciting to be outside instead of in a studio."

Plein air painters do their work outside, in good weather and in bad and often with people gawking over their shoulders. But that's part of the experience, artist Manuel Jomok says. From New Jersey, Jomok was one of more than two dozen artists taking part in the fifth annual Plein Air Paint Out in Niagara Falls last weekend.
Jomok spent the weekend trying to capture the force of the water of Niagara Falls, something he said he could only truly do by painting the world-famous cataract from only a few steps away and not from a picture in a studio. Jomok plans to retire soon and will pack up an RV to tour the U.S. with the goal of getting to Alaska by 2009 and painting everything along the way.
Artists completed as many paintings as they could over the two days and submitted two each to be judged. Two winners will be named, each receiving a $500 purchase award. One winning painting is to added to the city's art collection while the other was given to Niagara Falls, N.Y.

WORLDWIDE Paint Out Niagara Falls last minute details in place

Last minute details are being put into place today, as groups of plein air painters all over the globe anticipate participation in the

5th WORLDWIDE Paint Out.

Plein air painting (french for open air) was first introduced by the Impressionists in the 19th century but, today, has seen a new popularity and seems to be the new 'catch phrase'.

While the nature of en plein air is mostly all prima, some artists do a bit of tweaking back in the studio to their painting but, to be plein air, this amounts to only 5-10% on the piece.


Here in Niagara Falls, we have some return artists coming in for the paint out and many more that will be experiencing painting the drama of Niagara for the first time!

If any one is in the area this weekend, look for the artists in Queen Victoria Park, Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada. Artists tent located at the base of Murray Hill.

Niagara on the Lake Painting Workshops - click on arrow to play VIDEO

Niagara on the Lake voted the 'prettiest town in Canada' was the recent location for a 3 day en plein air watercolor painting workshop. The weather was great and the town was not too crowded, being it was towards the end of the season. The video is a little noisy, I'll have to remember to block my mic next time - all adds to the atmosphere. People were very friendly and interested in what was being done. Utica Free Academy Reunion - UFA

Well, here we are back at UFA - how many years later ? Gosh, can't say it seems like yesterday... Click on photo to enlarge

Our first stop was a mixer at Vista lanes. I have to say, I'd never been in there before but, I'd guess it hasn't changed much in those years. A few of us in the photo- Jacki Glinecki (me), Candy Meyers, Karlene Bulcinski, Elaine Ciccone and Fred Carncross
Then there was Jeff Jones and his wife enjoying the really loud music. It was good to see Jeff.
Forgive me for the names left out of photos - this is Fred,again and Sandy Zimmerman.
We were able to do a tour of the old building - now on the registry of Historic Places but being used as an old age home.A few of us were able to get the $1.00 tour and were allowed into some of the older parts of the building. Here's Candy, Polly Nolan and myself in the old choir room.

Some of the other places we were allowed to go in for the 'private' tour were so dark and we had only one flashlight, so no really usable photos there. We went down to the little theatre used for drama productions - it was dark even then but, now had refuse all over and construction debris. Still an interesting tour.

This was a group discussion session at the Sunday picnic with some of the grammar school gang from Holy Trinity on Lincoln Avenue. (hope i spelled these right)We were given a set a questions and each group from different grade schools had an interesting discussion about what it was like during those years for each of us.

Just happened that 2 large ones were shipped back to my sisters place from the Karpeles Museum, as I live in Niagara Falls Canada now, and was taking them back with me ( border customs for shipping -
is a nightmare, so I said 'sure, great idea'

About the Artist. . .

As a child Jacqueline, spent lunch hours in Munson Williams Proctor Institute Museum, when other children were on the playground. She was more at home in a solitary world that included books and art, and most fascinated by Thomas Cole (February 1, 1801 - February 11, 1848) was a nineteenth century American artist; is regarded as the founder of the Hudson River School, an American art movement that flourished in the mid-19th century and was concerned with the realistic and detailed portrayal of nature.) Series of paintings called the "Voyage of Life" and spent countless hours immersed in the atmosphere that these tremendously large paintings created.Childhood - Youth - Manhood - Old. Age At the age of 10, her parents sent her to Munson Williams Proctor School of Art where she spend evenings and Saturday mornings emersed in the artists world that held such fascination for her.

Artist Statement

Plein-Air Painting is a metaphysical skill capable of creating an image that lets the viewer 'Be there in the moment' when viewing the painting. J. R. Baldini

If I had to name one of the most influential elements in my artistic life, I would have to write a description of the magical state of consciousness one experiences on Monhegan Island.I have not, to this point in my life, experienced Monhegan personally in words. I believe painting or visual art is suffocated by verbal description.

Years ago when I met the great Hollywood and Broadway actor and artist Zero Mostel on the island, I invited him to a painting critique. He asked what we did at these critiques (which, I might add, had accumulated quite a following). With a feined look of horror on his face he boomed,"my dear, art is to be appreciated not criticized!"

You have certainly heard someone comment-I don't know much about art...But, that is not true. Words aren't necessary to express appreciation for visual art, your spirit tells you when you are moved by a creation.
