Plein air painter - next workshop Monhegan Island

American Contemporary plein air painter.

And so what I've learned...

what I have realized...is that when people come to workshops and share their time with me, they may be there to further their painting, pick up a few tips, or take a trip to a neat location while doing something fun, or maybe even learn painting...but what happens is, because we all connect on a creative level, they make a transformation - we all do.
I'm always in awe when this happens. In a recent workshop a few weeks ago, I had a few people who had painted before, but just needed a confidence boost. One, at the end of the workshop made an audible sigh and had tears streaming down her face when she turned around. Her simple 'thank you' said a world of things...
I want you to know, I've been where you are. And the realization is, I like helping people to communicate, get in touch with their heart values, feel empowered that it's OK to be who they are, whether they want to be an artist or just learn that expressing ourselves creatively is a core need in our lives. With it, we can grow and mature - without it, we exist and just get on with our life. I'm no more special than anyone else. The secret is to be the best you possible. I love my life !

Take a minute to write down 5 things that make you feel so special you feel it with your heart. Spending time with family and friends is a given, so we won't include these.
In this example, you've already spent an entire day with everyone you love and said goodbye
If you had one day left on earth to do what you wanted for you - what would the 5 things be that would be the perfect day?
  1. ___________
  2. ___________
  3. ___________
  4. ___________
  5. ___________
I heard a speaker do this exercise awhile ago - the purpose is to let you 'hear' your heart values. What's really important to you and then to let these values help you live your life. We'll all die someday, that's for certain. What isn't so certain is that we all live...what we have to answer for is -did I live ? did I love ? and did I matter ? I'm gonna keep working on those answers...

Monhegan Island, Maine plein air painter workshop -..the island time forgot

American Contemporary plein air painter.

I first visited Monhegan Island in the mid seventies. To this day, though there are small changes
that take place year to year, most of the island remains unchanged. Especially the land under
trust to the Monhegan Associates founded in 1954 by Theodore Edison (the youngest son of Thomas Alva Edison ...this has kept the wildlands of the island untouched.
Some places on the island have remained in a century without electricity. You may be someone reading
a laptop by the light of a kerosene lamp...
The island has long been an artists colony with some of the greatest painters in history having
painted there - among them
Rockwell Kent (a favorite)
Edward Willis Redfield,
Fredrick Waugh,
Robert Henri
Charles Bellows
Alice Stoddard Kent
Andrew Wyeth
Jamie Wyeth
Lawrence C. Goldsmith
Rueben Tam
Alex Minewski
Ted Davis
Zero Mostel
James Fitzgerald
Caroline D. Wade
S. P. Rolt Triscott to name a few....
This summer, I will make the trip by plane, taxi and ferry to again paint the tiny island of Monhegan.
Come join us for 5 days of en plein air oil, acrylic or pastel painting.

The Workshop is August 8 - 12, 2011

Beginner to Advanced

Plein Air Painter - understand this...

American Contemporary plein air painter.

Because what we produce as art is so very much tied into who we perceive ourselves to be,
try an experiment the next time you are reluctantly taking part in a public function/mixer...

Be aware of the fact that no one there really knows you, really doesn't know how you define yourself. Doesn't know the paradigm you believe...molded in your childhood from parents projections, relating to siblings and gym class in high school...

Make a plan to be outside yourself. Smile more, introduce yourself to at least a dozen people and try to find out about them and why they're there.

When you introduce yourself, don't give yourself that familiar label, after all they don't know if you're a minister or a rapper...

Whether you realize it consciously or not, your job or purpose in life is to connect with people.
Think about all the ways you do this naturally. Conversation, your art, sharing a meal, etc.

As an artist and workshop instructor, I may say something like "I help people to connect to and value their creativity, which is a great stress reliever ". Now, I could just say "I'm an Artist"...
which do you think would engage you in conversation ?

Reinvent yourself - don't wait for a New Year !

You never know how life connects people and ideas...ARTWORKSHOPS

Plein Air Painter -Protector of the lands and endangered animals

American Contemporary plein air painter.

Out door artists are very aware of the changes in the landscape they live in daily.
They see buildings demolished, trees cut, streams dry up, and species thin out.

Years ago, I was involved with Save the Whales, educating grade school children to be aware of what was happening to the magnificent giants of the deep - how they were being exploited and driven to extinction.

Our planet is so very fragile and the balance easily upset, as we're all seeing...

In Nairobi, a tiny baby elephant was separated from the herd, no doubt because of poachers.
She lost her way and perhaps looking for water, fell down a well.

She was rescued , along with other orphans and is being tended to and nourished. Her name is Naipoki (her name means "something painted) in Maa.

Recently, I adopted baby Naipoki and will get updates on her progress, until she, like others before her, is successfully returned to the wild.

Sometimes a little act can have 'elephant size' effects.

I hope she does well...

Plein air painter - we're very fortunate

St. Lucia, West Indies

American Contemporary plein air painter.

We're in a unique position as outdoor painters, to reach out and touch people's lives, when they see us painting on location. We interact with people, curious about why we're on a street corner painting or truly interested in art and appreciative to watch.

We're given unsolicited advice and stories about their Uncle Bob who painted pictures and their very talented niece who is only 6 but loves to draw.

People are fascinated with seeing an image appear, almost like magic on a canvas that starts with just a few brushstrokes. After all, we are abstract artists (all of us) starting a tree with a stroke here and there.

We're able to take a 3 dimensional scene and hopefully transfer the essence of it to a 2 dimensional surface with enough mystery to enable the artist to get lost in the scene and pass on this state of mind to the observer.

I was just thinking this morning how incredibly fortunate visual artists are. A poet or a songwriter or musician, can reach masses but, can't put an original work in a public space with the purpose of having someone fall in love with it and take it home...we touch peoples lives, one work at a time..

American Contemporary Plein Air Painter

American Contemporary plein air painter.

Greetings!

You have previously expressed an interest in plein air painting workshops, either by email or as a past participant.

We'd like to keep you current on scheduled workshops to date.

Ever wonder how time gets away so quickly if you're trying to find time to paint, or even just some quality time for yourself ?

A book by Eckhart Tolle is all about the 'living in the now' concept, not waiting for more time, financial stability or better health. Because anything other than living in the now, is not really living. We all play roles in life and sometimes, those roles become bigger than life. Years ago, I began painting on the island of Monhegan - and through the years, my painting trips began to all center around painting on islands. It wasn't planned but, either I was drawn to them, or I was asked to do a workshop on one.

And the biggest magnet for me personally, was that on an island, I found it incredibly easy to 'live in the now'. No effort required - and if you add the element of painting en plein air, the process begs to be repeated and so, this 'draw' was a force that I listened to, before books such as, A New Earth, came into the mainstream.

You're invited to join me on this incredible journey...

Plein Air Painter - How to decide on a workshop

American Contemporary plein air painter.

The most difficult decision...

On a few occasions, I've been in a dollar store and overheard a Mom or Grandma explaining to a young child that they were giving them a dollar and they could buy anything in the whole store they wanted , but only one thing...

First the child is unbelievably excited and runs off to explore the 'eye candy', only to come back in a few minutes to ask 'should I get this or this...??' hoping for -
1. the answer that they can have both
2. Having the decision made for them.

The investment is minimal

but the responsibility of multiple choice is overwhelming !

I get emails and phone calls from people trying to make an educated decision about taking a workshop. The desire is there, but they're really just looking for a positive reinforcement, that I think the workshop is a good fit for them.

The truth is, you take a workshop to grow. A tiny step can often lead to a big shift in your paradigm. One of the most sincerely rewarding parts of teaching workshops is seeing participants make a break through in their creativity.

What happens next is important...The break through may come, but

1. You may quickly begin to dismiss or explain it away, not trusting your eyes or feelings.

2. You may not even recognize that a break through happened.

A breakthrough can often be a direction you don't recognize. Your creativity can manifest strongly in a way you don't feel comfortable with .And that's the whole purpose !! If you're in your comfort zone, you're not growing.

If you join us in the safe, encouraging atmosphere of a workshop, you will be totally supported, uplifted and surprised at what you are capable of.

Modern Art - Ready Made Art ?

American Contemporary plein air painter.

Has representational art become 'lowly Art' to major museums ?
Modern Artists would have you believe this...
The deliberate absence of beauty in Modern Art, shows that we have progressed beyond representation, right ? or
... does the Emperor have no clothes ?
The Absence of Beauty

Can our Society really be defined by Modern Art ? Have we been reduced to only showing negative emotion ?
Art Imitates Life and Life Imitates Art

Anti-mimesis is a philosophical position that holds the direct opposite of mimesis. Its most notable proponent is Oscar Wilde, who held in his 1889 essay The Decay of Lying that "Life imitates Art far more than Art imitates Life". In the essay, written as a Platonic dialogue, Wilde holds that such anti-mimesis "results not merely from Life's imitative instinct, but from the fact that the self-conscious aim of Life is to find expression, and that Art offers it certain beautiful forms through which it may realize that energy.".[

Plein Air Painting-Monhegan Paintings

American Contemporary plein air painter on Monhegan Island in August

Got the chance this week to photograph a few of the paintings from a recent trip to Monhegan Island in Maine. I've been painting the island since 1974.
All paintings are done outdoors.
The beauty of Monhegan inspired me years ago to offer plein air painting workshops there.
The saying is 'everywhere you look is a painting waiting to happen'.
Find out the dates as soon as they are scheduled for 2011 on the 'island that time forgot' HERE
